City & Guilds Certificate in Design & Craft – Embroidery and Textile Decoration

 

Courses are offered at beginner, intermediate and advanced level and cover a range of hand, machine and textile dying and printing processes.

 

Beginners Level 2 Embroidery

 

The level 2 Certificate in embroidery consists of two units, introduction to design and the craft specialism.  Techniques covered will range from fabric printing, dyeing, machine and hand embroidery.

Unit 1 Design for Craft, a practical introduction to the skills and knowledge needed to begin the design process for craft including colour theory, line and tone, shape, form and texture techniques.

Unit 2 Embroidery, this unit aims to develop the practical skills and knowledge needed to make craft items. Three projects are to be undertaken and a folder of work is to be produced.

This level is aimed at learners who would like to pursue their skills beyond basic level and takes two years to complete.

 

Beginners Level 2 Textile Decoration

 

The level 2 Certificate in textile decoration consists of two units, introduction to design and the craft specialism.  Techniques covered will range from fabric printing, dyeing, manipulating and decorative techniques.

Unit 1 Design for Craft, a practical introduction to the skills and knowledge needed to begin the design process for craft including colour theory, line and tone, shape, form and texture techniques.

Unit 2  Textile Decoration, this unit aims to develop the practical skills and knowledge needed to make craft items. Three projects are to be undertaken and a folder of work is to be produced.

This level is aimed at learners who would like to pursue their skills beyond basic level and takes two years to complete.

 

Intermediate Level 3 Embroidery

 

For this level candidates will be expected to make more demanding items, as well as develop their skills in observation, recording and research. They will have the opportunity to explore new techniques and progress innovative ideas. A design unit plus a craft unit must be produced.

Unit 1 Design for Craft, the aim of this unit is to produce a design reference for development into craft. This includes personal research, contextual referencing, the design principles balance, rhythm, contrast, harmony, scale and proportion, colour theory, line and tone, shape, form and texture.

Unit 2 Embroidery, this is an opportunity for candidates to explore and develop inspirational source material to design items. The work produced will be based on an individual approach to innovative ideas and traditional techniques. Six projects are to be undertaken and presented along with supporting notes and evidence.

The level 3 Certificate in embroidery is aimed at learners who wish to develop skills to a professional level and takes three years to complete.

 

Advanced Level 3 Embroidery

 

The level 3 Diploma in embroidery is an opportunity for candidates to design items of an advanced nature by exploring, at some depth this specific craft.  The work will be based on a highly personal approach to innovative ideas and traditional techniques, requiring advanced practical skills in the creation of craft items.

The Diploma takes three years to complete.
